OK, trying not to get discouraged...

Browsing all of these art blogs and their links has been a rollercoaster ride. On the one hand, I see a lot of nice work that encourages me - makes me think that my own abilities are just as good, just as worthy of someday being published. Then, I come across a string of absolutely amazing work that is, well...humbling. There are A LOT of people out there, trying to do the same thing as me.

Here's the part where I try to put things in perspective: I have to keep reminding myself of where I am at the moment, fully acknowledging that I'm not anywhere near "ready" to start pounding the pavement with a portfolio. And, most of the people whose work I admire so much are at that point. I've only just determined that this is a serious pursuit, and I'm really just starting to develop my skills as well as my own voice.

I just need to keep working in earnest and see what comes out - learning what I can from those who are ahead of me. In the meantime, I'm reminded of my main focus (and inspiration) at this stage - they are the "here and now," while illustration is for farther down the road.

Diane,

Thanks for visiting my blog.
I think your art has a style that is unique, fresh and shows a great passion for things that speak to you. That's inspiring!

I'm convinced that every artist asks "Am I better than?" and the truth is, you never have to be better, only inspired to be.
That's what makes a good artist, great.

Ofcourse artisans have a hard time with that answer. So what does the master say to this?

"One can have no smaller or greater mastery than mastery of oneself."-Leonardo da Vinci

well said.

Hello from Portugal!I want to thank you for adding my Papelustro to your links!I've been reading your posts and watching your drawings."I've only just determined that this is a serious pursuit, and I'm really just starting to develop my skills..." I want to tell you that I feel just the same. "I just need to keep working in earnest and see what comes out - learning what I can from those who are ahead of me." I tell this to myself all the time!!!It seems we have something in common!I started recently to learn computer graphics. Since my college times that I knew what I wanted to do...but I could not.Finaly I got unemployed and decided to fight for a place in illustration and design world...Sometimes I get desperate and think that's too late for me!But somehow I keep going, learning more everyday and trying to improve!I wish you all the sucess in the world!

Thanks c.g. and belinha for the wonderful words of encouragement. I feel pretty good about things, but there are those moments when I question things (but it passes).

Belinha, I think that sometimes it's hard to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life while you're in college - there are a lot of distractions and there's "always tomorrow." But, when you finally do discover what you want, then I think you can go after it with more commitment and focus. That's my experience anyway.

Thanks for visiting.

You are right. Sometimes the art we see on line absolutely humbles me. But also nice art does inspire. Nice seeing your blog.
